James Shanks' 225 Acre Tract

Jacob Myers had hired James Shanks to survey tracts of land for him, and in payment Myers assigned this particular tract to Shanks. The tract, located south of Salt River and on the waters of Cedar Creek, was surveyed by Shanks on 24 Nov 1797. On that same day, Myers signed it over to Shanks who obtained a deed for it on 4 Feb 1805.


Survey

Surveyed for Jacob Myers 225 acres of land in Bullitt County, part of 1000 acres entered the 21st day of February 1783, on part of a treasury warrant No. __, lying on the waters of Cedar Creek on the south side of Salt River and bounded as followeth, viz. Beginning at 3 white oaks corner to John Dowdall's 500 acre survey and running thence with Dowdall's line South 160 poles to a line of Whitaker's 178 acre survey, thence with said line West 52 poles to his corner of black walnuts & poplar saplings (the original corner of white oak being down), thence N 52° W 8 poles to Tilford's corner of 2 sugartrees, elm & white oak, thence with Tilford's line N 21° W 400 poles to Tilford's corner of ash & beech, thence N 45° E 79 poles to Whitaker's corner of a beech, elm & 2 dogwoods, thence with his line S 45° E 117 poles to a red oak, thence S 45° W 97 poles to Whitaker's corner of locust, ironwood & sugartree, thence with another line S 45° E 183 1/2 poles to Whitaker's corner of white oak, thence to the beginning. November 24th 1797. James Shanks, surveyor. John W. Standaford & Ephraim Standaford, chain carriers.

For value received I do hereby assign the within mentioned tract of land to James Shanks, and the registers is requested to issue the patent in his name, as witness my hand this 24th day of September 1798. (signed) Jacob Myers. Teste: Isaac (his X mark) Chadock; John (his X mark) James.

Deed

Christopher Greenup Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of part of a land office treasury warrant No. __ there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto James Shanks, assignee of Jacob Myers, a certain tract or parcel of land containing 225 acres by survey bearing date the 24th day of November 1797, lying and being in the county of Bullitt on the waters of Cedar Creek on the south side of Salt River, and bounded as followeth to wit. In witness whereof the said Christopher Greenup Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Frankfort on the fourth day of February in the year of our Lord 1805, and of the Commonwealth the 13th.
